That we are more fascinated by how people paint or sculpt than by what their work says is telling. Living in a technically fascinating world has raised the curiosity bar to a new and ever higher level. It is therefore not surprising that we react this about human creativity. . . That individuals still express themselves seems to enthrall us as much as the miraculous functioning of a microchip. But what they have to say seems to elude us. Suffice to say, maturity will have entered our lives the day we discover the ever repeated message of the contemporary art world : "You're not listening to me are you!" - 23-01-08
I was born in a time when the sculpted or painted nude was perceived and displayed as historic, heroic, poetic, beautiful. I now live in a naked time when an artistic nude reflects an institutionalized disdain for the body bringing on a politically correct self-loathing only possible in the tortured minds of the "need to be interned". - 26-11-07
When technical skill became a persona non grata in art schools - a non-requirement for a visual art diploma, it opened the doors to the lowest common denominator - to anyone and everyone calling themselves " teacher". - 19-11-07
Le nu contemporain est plus "tout nu" que nu. - 18-11-07
Passion is what makes heroes of ordinary humans and the world a livable place. But when obsession reigns, hearts and minds are eventually filled with dread and submission - making victims of us all. When obsession reigns, passion, more often than not, is left to rot on the vine. - 19-08-07
Visual artists often have difficulty saying what they mean because they are so used to feeling what they mean. - 07-08-07
The goal of becoming an artist is an enviable one, as long as we recognize that it is a
multi-decade journey whose first steps must often be taken away from home. In the end, it is a question of accepting the inevitable: that such lofty aspirations are rarely predictable, always extraordinary and quite often lonely. - 07
If you do not dare leave home in order to water your visual-art roots, you cannot expect to be taken seriously - 07
Art is what artwork becomes when a viewer stops wondering about how it was created and is mesmerized by what the work is saying. - 20-05-07
It doesn’t take a talented photographer to produce an embarrassing or compromising image of an individual. Any good camera capable of shooting multiple images in a few seconds will do that easily. In this bizarre world which celebrates victimhood, watching losers fail and laughing at (rather than with) others titillating photographs are more a product of mean spirits and mechanics than talent. - 04-05-07
As old pieces of furniture are not necessarily antiques, artwork is not always art. - 04-03-07
In contemporary terms "I am an artist" is more often than not a speculative statement. - 15-01-07
