This portrait (above) of The Prime Minister is based on the first time I met him in 1980, in Sudbury, Ontario. In his most personal style he had cast away his prepared speech and began speaking to each and every individual in the crowd. His hands gestured and his voice conveyed a love for Canada which is rarely expressed with a more vivid conviction.
I truly enjoyed creating this contemporary rendition of a dynamic Prime Ministerial presence. Being an afficionado of contemporary art, M Chrétien well appreciated the results of what was for me a pleasurable exercise. Ce portrait du premier Ministre jean Chrétien me rappelle de sa visite à Sudbury en Ontario en 1980. Orateur hors pair, il a touché l'auditoire comme nul autre l'aurait fait. Ses gestes, son regard. . . le tout convainquant. Ce jours-là, Jean Chrétien nous a convaincu que le Canada nous appartenait.

| (Portrait at left) (Le portrait de gauche) The Prime Minister had often admired a portrait I had painted of the great protographer Yousuf Karsh which hangs in my studio. I created a similar oil sketch composition which included symbols of his office. The larger unfinished portrait became the preliminary sketch for the head and shoulders portrait commissioned by the alumni of the Collège classique de Trois Rivières. Le Premier Ministre avait souvent admiré un portrait que j'avais réalisé du renommé photographe Yousuf Karsh. J'ai donc réalisé une pièce qui ressemblait à cette toile - tout en respectant les symboles de la vie de politique de M Chrétien.
