ON BEING SUCCESSFUL

DU PROCESSUS SUCCÈS

Success increases when others see you as successful. - 14-07-05

You know you are not successful when you can't get the person who spends $5000 to $10,000 on a 2 week vacation to spend even a small portion of either amount on your artwork. You are definitely on your way to success when they trim the cost of their vacation in order to get both the holiday and your artwork. True success, though, is when they say: "to hell with the vacation" and spend it all on your work. - 05

Possibly one percent of fifty percent of the "interest calls" you get may actually agree to confirm their intentions (to buy your artwork) with a deposit. If you can live with that then maybe you'll have one half-percent of one percent of a chance to make it in the visual arts. - 03

"Sentimental (and successful) with a capital S" (The world's most collected artist paints fantasy scenes)
- National Post, 29-09-04 - Vanessa Farquharson

Reproductions of virtual reality selling at cocaine prices are nothing more than drugs for the soul. Like popular TV-advertised mood pills, they are high priced illusions - created to numb the mind and emotions into believing that everything is or will be ok. And neither are answers to individual or collective insecurities and anxieties. Thank God for Mary Cassatt and Degas and Rothko and Warhol and Rembrandt and Michelangelo. Thank God for artists who feed our souls rather than gnaw at them. Thank God for artists who make us think rather than offer us escape from our "selves". .

$1200. for a sophiticated photograph worth but a few dollars, run off in the thousands and signed in DNA??? Give me a break! $525,000 for an "original" painting resembling the millions produced in third world countries by hungry sweat-shop painters and sold in North American shopping malls as "starving artist sale" bargains? It would be possible to actually believe some of the homespun humble-pie hype of "cultural communicators" if a good portion of the $525,000. sugar-pill sale went to feed the bellies of sweatshop painters. One of them just might gain enough strength to create a statement more worthy than the "sentimental and successful" visuals masquerading as '"art". - 29-09-04
