Saint Luke - Saint Luc

Oil & Gold Leaf - huile & feuilles d'or  -  24" x 18"

Patron Saint of Physicians and Surgeons

Luke was born at Antioch in Syria. His gospels are full of love for the poor and great respect for women. He saw hope in God's mercy for everyone.

Though there is no basis in fact, Luke is traditionally perceived as having been one of the first painters of icons. Several images of Mary appeared in later centuries claiming him as a painter but these claims were proved false. Nonetheless, he is also considered a patron of painters.

This portrait of Saint Luke was commissioned by the outgoing Director of the Medical Corps, Colonel Gagné. Knowing that the portrait of the Patron Saint of Dental Surgeons was displayed in the Medical Centre she wished that the Patron Saint of physicians and surgeons also be displayed. The portrait was her retirement gift to the Medical Center.

In my rendition of St-Luke, he wears the military colours of the Medical Corps and the cover of his medical text carries the Corps military insignia.
